Mariana Alcoforado – Cartas Portuguesas | João G. Ripper, Monodrama for Soprano & Orchestra
Carla Caramujo

After being inspired by the letters exchanged between D. Pedro I and the Marquesa de Santos to compose Domitila, the Brazilian composer João Guilherme again uses epistolary relationships to create a short opera, this time inspired by the romantic correspondence of Sóror Mariana Alcoforado. Conducted by Hannu Lintu, soprano Carla Caramujo sings at the national première of Cartas Portuguesas, a work commissioned as part of the partnership established between Gulbenkian Música and the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra.

This will be the fifth work by João Guilherme Ripper that Carla Caramujo interprets after Onheama, in 2016, for Festival Terras Sem Sombra, Five Poems after Vinicius de Moraes, Icameabas and Domitila for International Music Festival of Pará, Cistermúsica and Castelo Branco’s Teatro Avenida, on the following years.
